Rose Droll - "Too Damn Good to Give Up"

Rose Droll's "Too Damn Good to Give Up" is pure indie-rock euphoria. The skeletal arrangement is dry and dusty, but its warmth radiates like wan autumn sunlight. Any fan of Olivia Tremor Control's Dusk at Cubist Castle may hear flashes of that band's pop sensibilities - from the sparse staccato piano to the endearing sleigh bells - throughout the song.

Unlike many of the tracks on her terrific 2017 Photograph EP, Droll sings exclusively in her higher register here. Rich melodies come rushing out of her like Liv Tyler's Ring Wraith-crushing river in Fellowship of the Ring, echoing the no-holds-barred style of Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman (and her recent single "No Coffee" in particular). Whether the titular lyric is referring to herself, a romantic partner or a spectacular dentist is left unsaid, but that uncertainty doesn't detract from the urgency at the core of this glimmering song.
